Welcome
My name is Birthe Vikøren – Abstract artist from Bergen
I create abstract paintings inspired by nature, light and dark, and the inner landscape.
Through acrylic, spray and mixed media I explore how colors and shapes can
express emotions, moods and movement.
My art is about process and presence.
– about trusting what occurs in the moment.
Each work is unique, with traces of layers, texture and dynamics,
and carries a meeting between energy and calm.
I hope it can awaken something in you.
Birthe Vikøren
I became ill after a viral infection of covid-19 in September 2022, and am still struggling with the long-term effects. The diagnosis of long-covid, or post-viral fatigue syndrome, has limited my life to a very great extent. Painting has become a way to find peace and shift focus from illness to creation.
I have taken courses with the artists Linda Sales and Lena Andersen, from whom I have learned a lot. Otherwise, I am self-taught. I work a lot expressively and intuitively – often without a fixed plan, but with a desire to convey what cannot always be said in words. Some works are more figurative or naturalistic, but most often with an abstract feel.

Artist statement
I paint to find peace, to listen inwardly, and to be in touch with what is moving – both within me and around me. My paintings are abstract landscapes, inner and outer, where colors and shapes emerge layer by layer - as traces of emotions, memories, and the rhythms of nature.
The colors carry both light and darkness, and invite reflection, silence and presence. I work intuitively and expressively, often with my hands, and allow flowing layers to build depth, movement, and life in the images.
The titles are poetic introductions to the paintings, attempts to capture the subtle and the unspoken. I am inspired by the movements of nature and by the process itself - daring to trust what emerges.
Through my art, I want to create a space for silence, wonder and reflection. A place where energy and calm can exist side by side.
