Welcome

Birthe Vikøren is an abstract artist from Bergen, Norway, working with nature’s slow shifts. She draws inspiration from sunrises that arrive without witnesses, lichen and moss growing without haste, stone carrying time, and flowers and plants that open and close in their own rhythm. She is deeply attentive to how nature’s elements — both the small and the monumental — hold layers of time and traces of everything that has been.

Vikøren’s works are built in layers, with textures that mirror nature’s pulse, transitions, and subtle marks. She creates abstract paintings that invite stillness, spaciousness, and quiet energy — a visual language that allows the viewer to sense nature’s continuity within themselves. Her work has been shown in both physical and digital exhibitions, and she collaborates with galleries, art books, and her own online shop.

Birthe Vikøren

I have always been drawn to nature’s slow shifts. Sunrises that arrive without witnesses. Lichen and moss growing without haste. Stone carrying time in layers. Flowers and plants opening toward the light, each in their own way, in their own rhythm. Traces of erosion showing where water and wind have been. Nature’s pulse — quiet, yet alive.

As the rhythm of my own life slowed down, I began to see this more clearly. What once felt like a subtle sense became an experience: that nature continues, independent of us. That infinity exists in the small. That stillness holds. That time does not rush.

When I look at flowers, I don’t just see color and form. I see their movement — the opening, the closing, the light they hold. I see how they stand in the landscape, small living markers of nature’s own time. I see the layers of everything that came before them, and everything that will come after.

In my art, I try to translate this slowness into a visual language. Layers, texture, movement. Traces of what has been. Shifts that do not shout, yet remain powerful. I do not paint the motifs themselves, but the state — nature’s continuity, its calm, its independence.

Artist statement

Trust the Process

I paint to find calm, to listen inward, and to stay in touch with what moves — both within me and around me. My work grows out of nature’s slow shifts: sunrises that arrive without witnesses, lichen and moss growing without haste, stone carrying time, and flowers and plants opening toward the light in their own rhythm.

The paintings are abstract landscapes, both inner and outer, where colors and forms emerge layer by layer — traces of nature’s pulse, the movements of time, and what lies quietly beneath the surface. The colors hold both light and darkness, inviting reflection, stillness, and presence.

I work intuitively and in layers, often with my hands, letting fluid layers build depth, movement, and life within the paintings. The titles are poetic entry points — attempts to capture the subtle, the unspoken, the slowly shifting.

Through my art, I hope to create spaces for stillness, wonder, and breath. A place where energy and calm can exist side by side, just as nature’s own rhythm does.
