My name is Birthe Vikøren, and I am an artist from Bergen.

I have always loved being outdoors. But it wasn’t until I had to slow down that I truly began to see nature. The light shifting across the mountains. Water finding its own path. The small changes happening constantly, often without us noticing.

​

That shift changed the way I paint. In the studio I work intuitively and in layers, using acrylic, pigment, ink and other materials. I move between what is planned and what is allowed to emerge. Some layers remain visible. Others are covered and return only as traces.

​

I don’t always know where a painting will end when I begin. Instead, I try to listen to what happens in the process. When I pause and let the work unfold, something often appears that I could not have planned.

​

Nature is a vital part of this — not only as inspiration, but as a reminder of rhythm, change, and the importance of letting things take the time they need.

​

This is also where much of my art has its origin: in the transition from a fast-paced life to one with more room to notice what is actually there.

​

I don’t make art to explain something specific. I make it to express what doesn’t always fit into words.
